Take a Walk in Murrells Inlet

Are you looking for an out-of-the-ordinary adventure that’s suitable for the whole family? Head to the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, located in Murrells Inlet, SC.

This historic fishing village is one of the state’s oldest coastal communities. Its main attraction—a 1/2-mile wooden boardwalk over a natural saltwater marsh—offers a wealth of waterfront dining, sightseeing, and entertainment options, making this outdoor hotspot one for the memory books.

Located just south of Myrtle Beach, SC, Murrells Inlet once served as an old-world shipping port, a summer resort for farm owners, and as a safe-harbor, stopping-off point for sea pirates needing to perform ship maintenance. Although a Civil War-era port blockade threatened the local industry, blockade runners continue to ship local goods out of Murrells inlet.

A series of hurricanes and the post-Civil War economic downturn cast Murrells Inlet into hard times before regaining national prominence when then-president Grover Cleveland spent time duck hunting in the region. The region’s run-down plantations were purchased and renovated, bringing forth a new resort era, as well as a resurgence in local fishing.

Today, Murrells Inlet is known as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina”—in no small part to the success of its homegrown restaurants. Hungry visitors can fill up on everything from fresh, Lowcountry seafood, lobster, and wood-fired steaks to burgers and pizza at seven MarshWalk restaurants: Bovine’s, The Claw House, Creek Ratz, Dead Dog Saloon, Drunken Jacks, Wahoo’s Fish House, and Wicked Tuna.

MarshWalk patrons can get their fill of local music, too, as the area’s entertainment schedules are packed with performances from local artists across all genres. Fourth of July fireworks celebrations, annual Oyster Festivals, and more unusual events like the MarshWalk Masters—a friendly competition in which mini golfers venture from restaurant to restaurant, putting to compete for $1,200 in prizes—only add to the fun.

Ready to visit? The Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is located at 4025 Hwy 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, about 10 miles south of Myrtle Beach. Admission is free—see you there!
