Top Five Things for Families To Do in Mt. Pleasant, SC

Having sustained significant damage from Hurricane Hugo in September 1989, residents of Mt. Pleasant, SC., were undaunted and rebuilt their city into one of the fastest-growing communities along the South Carolina coast. 

Today, Mt. Pleasant offers local families, business professionals, and vacationers alike an authentic taste of urban community and historical significance. In 2010, Mt. Pleasant was named an All-America City by the National Civic League in recognition of its residents’ ability to leverage civic engagement, collaboration, inclusiveness, and innovation in successfully addressing local issues.

With plenty of things to do in a city of this size, we wanted to focus on some of those more exclusive to Mt. Pleasant. Local activities, standout parks, and historical landmarks highlight our list of the top five things for families to do in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market 

Get fresh with the locals at the Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market. Farmers, craftsmen, artists, and other members Mt. Pleasant community flock to Moultrie Middle School’s Farmers Market Pavillon every Tuesday afternoon from April through September for live music, fresh seafood, locally grown produce, family activities, and more. You can also bend the ear of Clemson Extension Master Gardeners, who will be happy to share their horticulture knowledge with you.

Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival 

One of Mt. Pleasant’s noteworthy annual events, the Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival pays tribute to Mount Pleasant’s local shrimping and fishing industry, the fishermen who keep it alive, and the importance of the industry to the local economy. Festival-goers can enjoy a boat parade and ceremonial blessing of the shrimp/fishing fleet, as well as live music, a craft show, and lots of free, family-friendly activities.

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

Although the first thing you might notice is the 888-foot USS Yorktown aircraft carrier, the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum offers so much more to its guests. The Yorktown is joined on site by the USS Laffey Destroyer, the USS Clamagore submarine, and some of the most significant aircraft in U.S. carrier history, including the F4F Wildcat, F-14 Tomcat, and the Vietnam-era AH-1J Cobra close-support helicopter. Entrance to the Vietnam Experience Exhibit and the Medal of Honor Museum are also included with admission.

Old Village District 

The roots of the Old Village community stretch back to the 18th century. Its small-town main street vibe is fueled by local, one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques of all types while providing a destination for local events. If you’re visiting with the family, be sure to visit Pitt Street Pharmacy for a throwback-style dining experience, complete with a classic soda fountain and made-to-order lunch choices at great prices. 

Palmetto Islands County Park

With a kayak launch, crabbing dock, sand volleyball court, hiking trails, horseshoe pits, and a seasonal splash park, Palmetto Islands County Park offers something for almost everyone within its borders. Above all (pun intended), the park’s 50-foot observation tower and play area are hugely popular with young visitors. Admission is free, with bicycle, pedal boat, and picnic shelter rentals available.
